40th Joint School Science Exhibition

40 years ago, four young science students had a dream - to share the joy they found in science with others. Their intention was simple and they were determined. On the first day of the exhibition, more than 20,000 visitors queued up outside the City Hall to see what these young people had to offer on science.  When our founders saw waves after waves of enthusiastic response from participants coming to the Exhibition, they were simply thrilled.  Since then, the J.S.S.E. had become an annual event well received and highly regarded by students and the community.

Today we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the J.S.S.E.  The exhibition involves 77 secondary schools, 20 primary schools, 3 universities and 4 overseas delegations from China, Taiwan, Singapore and Hungary.  600 student participants worked together for the past ten months for one purpose.  It is to bring forward our theme this year: "Scientific Solutions for the Green Revolution".

As the chairperson of the 40th Joint School Science Exhibition Preparation Committee, I am the first to admit that the organization of such a large scale exhibition has not been just smooth sailing.  Gathering a group of intelligent and well-intentioned school representatives to work together, we encountered arguments in all aspects of the organization.  Discussions, debates and soul searching often dragged on "for a while".  Furthermore, we need to compete acutely with other worthy appeals for sponsorships.  For a group of secondary school students like us, this has been one of the most challenging tasks.  However, we have worked very hard to ensure that the fund-raising, publicity and the organization of the exhibition would live up to the reputation of J.S.S.E. and that the dream shall continue.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all sponsors, advisors, adjudicating panel, alumni and those who have supported us throughout the year. Without their support and participation, the exhibition would not have been able to come to life in front of you today. I sincerely hope that our visitors will enjoy the exhibition.

Looking ahead, I anticipate there will be more anniversaries to come. We have kept the fire burning for the past 40 years. I would invite you all to keep the curiosity of science alive in your heart and in the community!

A turkey was chatting with a bull

"I would love to be able to get tot he top of that tree." sighed the turkey,"but I havn't got the energy."

"Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?" replied the bull. "They're packed with nutrients."

Turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it actually gave him enough strength to reach the first branch of the tree.

The next day, after eating more dung, he reached the second branch.

Finally, after a fortnight, there he has proudly perched at the top of the tree.

Soon he was spotted by a farmer.

Who promptly shot the turkey out of the tree.

Moral of the story:

Bullshit might got you to the top,

but it won't keep you there.
